taste / teist / •

A five letter word but with a mouthful of meanings – flavour on your tongue; a small portion; have experience of; aesthetic discernment in art, literature.

Darling might well be a small town but therein lies diversity and an abundance of attractions. Watch this space for dates to The Taste of Darling 2018 where we, once again, will pull out ALL the stops and presenting a Taste of Darling.

This is your invitation join to us for the day, or better still spend the weekend, and let us spoil you with music, food, beer, wine, arts and crafts – a feast for the senses – which are all those things which reflect the variety and ingenuity of this small West Coast town.

There is much that is special about Darling, where time is still measured by the Church clock and only last week did we have a cow strolling the Main Street. Most special is that this town (or maybe “dorpie”) which on the surface may seem time-warped, has not only a huge heart but a bellyful of innovation, creativity and talent. But what else would one expect with a First Lady like Evita, a theatre like the Perron, and a train which toots its way through two or three times a day?

The “Taste of Darling” is our opportunity to put the spotlight on our hidden talents. There will be no charge for admission to the Taste of Darling although some music performances will require payment of a fee, as will the live shows at various venues, and of course nibbles and drinks, but the street music comes free!

So park your car and wander the town on foot; there is so much to see, and so much to do, for young and old alike. Come and treat yourself to a real taste of Darling where we promise you the warmest welcome and a generous serving of Platteland hospitality.

Located just off the Main Road, Darling’s much-loved neighbourhood café offers guests a relaxing home feel.  Perfect for lazy breakfasts and leisurely lunches, this charming venue is very casual with just a dollop of sophistication.

It is just the place to take your mom on the weekend, your pooch for an afternoon cake and tea and your kid for a morning chino.

With free wireless during the day, Chicory Cheese is the ideal place for that casual business breakfast or lunch.

Make sure you stop by and soak up the atmosphere while tucking into some of our delicious food.

Darling’s finest, all under one roof – at cellar door prices too!

Set in the heart of the West Coast – famous for its springtime display of wild flowers, Voorkamerfest, and orchid nursery – the Darling Wine Shop showcases the wines of Darling. This family-owned business is the brainchild of négociant Charles Withington and provides a one-stop shop both physical and online.

While we do focus on Darling wines, there is also a small section of gems – “not Darling but dear to me” – a few exceptional wines from vineyards which have a personal connection.

In addition, the “Taste of Darling” project initiated by Charles encompasses complementary and iconic local produce headlined by exceptional oysters and mussels which may be collected from the Shop on Fridays having been picked from the West Coast that very morning!

Come and visit for a great Darling wine experience and a warm Darling welcome.
